My Promise to You
Choosing a therapist is an important decision.
I have been in your position – you want to feel the therapist will be kind and understanding, and ultimately help you to feel better. My approach is thorough and focused, and I aim to find the root cause for what has been troubling you, not paper over or just deal with surface symptoms. This is vital, otherwise symptoms may well just pop up elsewhere in your life as the real issue hasn't been addressed.

Our work will always be tailored to you as an individual. If you have never spoken to a therapist before, you may have trouble knowing what you are feeling or putting words to what has happened to you. My therapy room is a safe and supportive space, and after our initial meeting we will agree to working in a way that helps to you access your emotions and thoughts. I will always psychoeducate you as we go along, so that you have a full understanding of what is happening and why. We are a team, and I will encourage you to find strengths and inner wisdom that you may have lost touch with or not been aware that you posessed.

Some of the modalities I use...
We may talk about past events if you feel you need to and you feel sharing will help you. Feeling seen and heard by another is a hugely healing experience, especially if you have never shared your story with anyone before. However, we will not go 'over and over' the past, but will focus on how you are feeling in the 'here and now'. We will work on helping you to 'process your experiences' so that the mind and body can move on from past events. We will also focus on the body, and when you feel safe we will do body awareness work. Gently we will integrate the body and mind and allow the mind to know you are now safe. I have done all of this work myself too, so I understand your journey and can support you.

Using Hypnotherapy
I like to use hypnotherapy where I believe it will be helpful, and it will always be used along side other approaches. I will discuss this with you at our initial session and I will adivse if I think it will be a good fit for our work together. Think of hypnotherapy as visualisation whilst in an extremely relaxed state! It can help us to help calm an overly reactive fight/flight trigger if you have been in this reactive state for a long time. Hypnosis is extremely useful to help establish a 'safe place' and this may form part of our initial groundwork, especially useful if you think you may have complex ptsd. We may also do timeline work, and I may use other techniques to 'soften' past events or traumatic memories.
My aim for you is that as well as achieving your goal set at the beginning of our work, you will gain a greater understanding of how to read your own emotions and those of people around you who you share your space with. If you adapted to become quiet and small as a child then we will have worked on you finding a voice and allowing yourself to 'take up space'. If your childhood had left you feeling you were carrying a head full of rage, then we would have worked with the complex subject of shame and how it powerfully pushes people in one of two directions.
